Character

The Pekin chicken is very friendly, they love people and will quickly become part of the family, they make excellent pets for the children as they enjoy human attention and cuddles, they are also smaller in size and easy to handle, however, don’t let their size fool you as they are full of character and confident and cheeky little beings. It’s such a pleasure to watch them chickening about in the garden. They can be a little territorial if in big groups so be wary introducing smaller bantam chickens into an established Pekin flock.

Suitability

Pekin Bantam chickens are a good bird for first time chicken keepers and do particularly well in an urban garden as they tend not to scratch around in flower beds making them an ideal back yard hen. They do have feathered feet so will need extra foot care in the wetter months, they can free range and forage in bigger spaces as they are clever little chickens and can navigate their way home, they can also fly so would need an enclosed run if not out with you in the garden and can manage a ladder or ramp up to their house.

History

The Pekin is a true bantam chicken breed which originated from Peking (now known as Beijing) in China. They were first imported from China to the U.K. around 1830-1840 and were presented to Queen Victoria, said to come directly from the Emperor’s private collection.

Now a well-established breed in the UK they are perhaps one of the most popular bantam chicken varieties for pets and back gardens. They come in many colour variations and can also be found as a frizzle feather, which are very pretty and look adorable.

Pekin hens can be quite broody and they make great mothers, they will lay around 100-150 small cream tinted eggs per year, they have a life expectancy of up to 10 years.
